LipiFlow is a much anticipated dry eyes treatment platform in Australia. Recent evidence is quite clear- dry eyes most of the time are caused by malfunctioning meibomian glands, also known as meibomian gland dysfunction.
At The Eye Practice we will be installing the first LipiFlow unit in the country. LipiFlow is the first effective treatment for evaporative dry eyes caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. It is a very sophisticated procedure for a very complex and frustrating problem. What is clear to us now is that dry eyes for a subset of the population is bordering on debilitating, as we have had interest from as far away as Melbourne and New Zealand. Our eye care facility specialises in contact lenses and over the years we have been frustrated with dry eyes as it is the leading cause of contact lens failure. Dry Eyes though does not stop with contact lens wearers; it also affects a significant portion of the population that work in air conditioning, look at computer screens all day and is also particularly common in pre and post menopausal women.
To qualify as a candidate for the procedure we prefer the following protocol:
- Answer a dry eye questionnaire
- Testing with Meibomian Gland Evaluator to determine how many of the meibomian glands in the lower eyelid do not seem to be secreting oily discharge
- Assessment with the LipiView Interferometer to determine the quality of the meibomian oil in the tear film
Once all three test are performed and all necessary criteria met, it is then very likely that the LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation procedure will provide significant benefit and in some cases prove to be a life changing event in people with severe symptoms.
It is preferred for logistical reasons to do the evaluation on one visit and the procedure on a second visit. Because we anticipate some patients will be traveling long distances we recommend that when trying to make an appointment that you make it clear to the reception staff of your travels and we will make every endeavor to accommodate both evaluation and the procedure on the same day.

Appointments for the LipiView assessment will be available as of Monday 25th June 2012. If you happen to be traveling from outside of Sydney please make this clear to our reception staff so they can try and fit you in conveniently.
