Conjunctivitis is the inflammation and/or infection of the thin layer of skin that covers the white of the eye situated underneath the eyelids.
Conjunctivitis is most commonly caused by an allergic reaction or a bacterial or viral infection. It is usually characterised by redness, irritation and watering of the eye and sometimes discharge.
